Cuthbert Green (1893-1916)

Stanley student for the Civil Service served with 2 DLI on the Somme

Cuthbert Green was born in Stanley in 1893. His father was local man Jonathan Green (1858-1916) who was at various times a butcher on Front Street, Registrar of Births and Deaths and a Methodist Lay Preacher. His mother was Ann Green nee Storey (1854-1914) who was born in Low Fell. His parents married in 1882. At the 1911 census they are shown as having been married for 29 years in which time they had six children of whom four were still living. His mother died in 1914.

In 1901 Cuthbert’s family lived at 3 Thorneyholme Terrace, Stanley with his mother, two sisters and one brother. In 1911 he lived at Cresta, View Lane, Stanley, a large 13 roomed house, with both parents, one sister, one brother and a domestic servant. His occupation at the time of the census is recorded as a student for the civil service.

Cuthbert joined the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd Battalion. He was posted to France on 25 July 1916. He was listed as missing presumed dead on 15 October 1916 which, given his battalion, is likely to have been during the Battle of Le Transloy. This action took place in atrocious weather conditions causing the muddy conditions that are so readily associated with the Somme.

Cuthbert Green was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. As his father Jonathan had died on 31 December 1916, his medals and effects were sent to his sister Kate. She was by now Mrs Holt, a certificated school teacher living at Oxhill Schoolhouse, Stanley.

As his body was not identified Cuthbert is honoured on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. He was also remembered in the Roll of Honour 1914-18, West Stanley Wesleyan Methodist Church and in the Book of Remembrance 1914-18, DLI, Durham Cathedral.
