Friedrich Wilhelm Singer (1874-)
Pastor to German Seaman's Mission, South Shields
On the 1911 census Friedrich Singer is recorded as living at the Seaman’s Mission, where he works as a minister. His age is noted as 37. Three years later war broke out between his native Germany and his adopted country. By this time he had moved out of the Mission and claimed to be 45 years old! His addition of a few years may have been to try and avoid any unpleasantness with the British authorities; all German men were considered reservists until the age of 45.
A newspaper account of his arrest can be found by scrolling down the page to “Supporting Materials.”
