The following information comes from records held at the archives at the Museum of the Order of St John, and is used with their kind permission. Reference OSJ/1/1/12/9:

VAD Hospital, Mayfield, Jarrow-on-Tyne
September 15th 1917

Commandant: Miss Scott

Hospital: This is a house which has been lent by Messrs Palmer’s Shipbuilding [for]a hospital

Beds: 35 beds in
5 wards

Trained staff: 1 Sister-in-Charge

Massage: The massage in this hospital is not done by a trained Masseuse.

VADs: 26 work in shifts, all live out

Paid help: 1 Cook
1 Charwomen

Remarks: This little convalescent home is in good order. There is every convenience, and a good garden. The patients and staff are well cared for.
