Hugh Scollen was born in Seaham Harbour in 1897. By the age of fourteen he was working as a trapper at Houghton le Spring colliery.
22/197 Private Hugh Scollen served with the 22nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry from his enlistment in 1915 until he was taken prisoner of war during the German Offensive in March 1918. Initially he was taken to the POW Camp at Soltau in Northern Germany but on 31 Aug 1918 he was allowed to go to Switzerland where he was interned.
