Arthur Davison (1875-1915)

Builder from Sacriston served with 1st/8th DLI

This article appeared in the Chester le Street Chronicle, 23 July 1915- Private A. Davison, 4 Davison Terrace, Sacriston

Private A. Davison of 4 Davison Terrace, who is one of the 8th Durham who is just reported to have been killed, is a native of Darlington, where his father was for many years a master painter, and where he still lives in retirement. He himself has not been many years at Sacriston, but while he was there he built the terrace in which his widow and five children live, and which is named after him. He has two other brothers in the Army, and another doing war work at sea.

Further information:

It seems likely that Arthur moved to Sacriston in 1911, after the census had been taken. His two youngest children, Amelia and Robert, were both born within the Chester-le-Street registration district.

According to the list of soldiers effects, Arthur was killed at “Crossroads, Broodsinde [Broodseinde]” in Belgium, probably on 26 April 1915 (there is a question mark in front of this date in the register), just one week after he landed in France.

Arthur’s estate was passed for probate on 9 March 1916. His widow, Ann, is named as his administrator and his estate valued at £996 6s (the equivalent of about £80,000, one hundred years later).
