Benjamin William Black (1882-1916)


Acting Company Sergant-Major from Great Lumley served with 1st/8th DLI and won Military Medal


Company Sergeant Major Benjamin William Black was married to Margaret Elizabeth Black with whom he had three sons, James Brooks, Thomas, and Joseph Black. Before the War, he worked as a coal miner. He joined the 8th Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry and was first in France on 20 April 1915. This means that he probably fought at Ypres. He was reported killed in action 18 September 1916, during the Battle of the Somme.
