Charles Albert Friend (1890-1970)
Durham Light Infantry man taken prisoner of war
Corporal Charles Albert Friend was born in India. He enlisted the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry and was stationed in Colchester with it during 1911. He was also part of the battalion band at some point.
With the DLI, he entered France on the 8th of September 1914.
By the 25th of November of that year he was a prisoner of war. He was held in Grossenwedermoor (Germany) and Hulsberg (Netherlands) camps. Friend was repatriated the 18th of November 1918 on the troopship SS Willochra.
