William McMorrin (1900-)

Yorkshire man served with Durham Light Infantry

William McMorrin was born in South Bank, Yorkshire, around 1900. By 1918 he was a storekeeper at Howle Hope farm, Sedgefield.

At the age of 18 he attested at Sunderland on 1 September 1918 and was called up two weeks later (16 September 1918), when he was posted to 53rd (Young Soldiers) Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and numbered TR/5/173551 in the Training Reserve.

After a few months with 53rd DLI, William was posted to 51st DLI at Catterick. On 24 February 1919 he overstayed his leave and was awarded ten days loss of pay by the Commanding Officer (CO).

On 21 October 1919 he was posted to the Rhine Army and joined 20th DLI in Cologne. One month later he was posted to Headquarters 2nd Rhine Brigade (most likely as an officer’s batman).

William McMorrin was finally discharged to Class Z Reserve on 25 March 1920.
