Walter John Gargate was born in Shildon, County Durham, around 1891. He lived with his family in Gateshead Farm, Middleton-in-Teesdale, and worked as a servant for the Kitching family in Houghton le Side.
He enlisted in Bishop Auckland in 1914 with the 10th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, numbered 12041.
Gargate was sent to France and was killed in Action the 14th of August 1915.
