Evenwood, Ramshaw and District History Society film: “In the Pink”

The Evenwood, Ramshaw and District History Society awarded a Heritage Lottery grant in 2017.  Their project was to produce a film on the effects of the First World War on the communities of the Gaunless Valley – St. Helens, West Auckland, Etherley/Toft Hill, Evenwood, Cockfield, Butterknowle, Copley, Woodland and including the smaller places like Morley, Esperley Lane, High and Low Lands.

Here is a trailer to their film, which was produced by “Crackin Toast”:

“In the Pink” – The Trailer

WHY THE TITLE  “IN THE PINK”

We have a letter dated 4 November 1916 from Evenwood lad, Tommy Dunn, 11/DLI.  It was from France, sent to his family and he stated that: “I am in the pink” which was a popular expression of the day to mean that he was well.  On the 12 December he was wounded and sadly, 26 December 1916 he died, aged 24 years.  It was ironic that 7 weeks earlier, he seemed content with life even in trying circumstances – “in the pink”.  By Boxing Day, the life if the Dunn family had been turned upside down.
