Philip Barker Hindmarch (1870-1919)


Shincliffe man enlisted twice in the Canadian Expeditionary Force


Photographs provided by the family of Philip Barker Hindmarch, born 1870, in Shincliffe, County Durham, and moved to Canada, serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the war. Hindmarch died of tuberculosis in 1919.

These postcard photographs were sent from Philip to his family in Sherbooke, Quebec, Canada.

1) Portrait photograph of Philip Hindmarch, postmarked 22 December 1915, Bakewell, England, to his wife Agnes. ‘Spending Christmas in Bakewell and mean to have a good time. Phil’

2) Photograph of seven men in hospital patient uniform, Hindmarch is marked with an arrow, postmarked 21 November 1916, Camberwell, England, to his wife Agnes. ‘I have marked myself 1. No. 2 is an Irish Guard. No. 3 is a Grenadier from Cheshire and has 5 pieces of shell in his back. He has been in hospital since Loos. The Irishman and I came in together, you will see part of the stripes on my arm. Phil’

3) Photograph of a large group of soldiers and officers, mostly CEF, postmarked 16 May 1917, Hastings, England, to his son Frank. ‘I have just been marked C3. You will see my red mug just above the cross. Dad’ [C3 is a medical grading]
