Report of Joseph Moody as a prisoner of war

News received by Joseph's wife concerning him being taken as a prisoner of war

“Pte. Joseph Moody, D.L.I., is now a prisoner of war, and his wife who resides at Mavin Buildings, Sacriston, has recently received a field card from him stating that he is not wounded and is quite well. He joined the Territorials at Chester-le-Street, and is well-known in that town, formerly working at the Lumley 3rd Pit. At the outbreak of the war he was in camp at Conway, and was at once mobilised for war, going to Gateshead and proceeding with the second draft of his Regiment to France where he has been for two years. He has fortunately escaped being wounded, although he has been in hospital with enteric fever and returned to his unit in France four times. He was home on leave in January last, for fourteen days. Pte. Moody holds one of the premier positions in boxing, and has won three medals for the light-weight and feather-weight championships in his Battalion. He was one of the prisoners of war recognised by Pte. Walker, of Sacriston, who it will be remembered escaped from the German camp a short time ago. He has a brother, Pte. Thos. Moody, D.L.I., who has been a prisoner of war for three years, while another brother, Pte. George Moody, D.L.I., made the supreme sacrifice on the same day”.
