16th Battalion Durham Light Infantry was formed in Durham City in October 1914 where they were quartered in local junior schools. They were initially a “Service” Battalion of the Fourth New Army, but when that formation was broken up they became a “Reserve” battalion to find drafts for the battalions in France.
In September 1916 the battalion became the 1st Training Reserve battalion at Cannock Chase in Staffordshire.
