Hello John,
Great image, i purchased a Durham Light Infantry Medal a while ago now,
which is engraved on it, Football Tournament 1917 France ,
apart from Durham Light infantry insignia on the other side, that is all that's on it , do you think your photograph might have been taken in France , maybe part of a Football Tournament ?
My Grandfather Joseph Summerson , served with the 6th D.L.I , enlisted 1914 and was over in France from 1915

Report abuseRalph Elliott front row, second from right
The regiment diary did refer to the regular football matches played to keep the men fit and Ralph Elliott was no exception. He had two battered areas on either side of his forehead from heading the wet leather ball or so I was told. Nonetheless Ralph Elliott played cricket for Durham and had an army footballing career.
