The barracks were active during World War I as the headquarters of the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion Durham Light Infantry. They were enlarged in 1914 and the annual training took place in June.

Lieutenant-Colonel W. H. Briggs, commanding;
Majors K. J. W. Leather, E. S. Curling and Sir H. S. M. Havelock-Allan;
Honorary Lieutenant S. Whan, quartermaster.
