War Memorial Statue, in front of the Town Hall, St John's Chapel

War Memorial statue

Type: War Memorial

Marble statue of a soldier in the D.L.I. field service uniform with bowed head, leaning on a rifle. He stands on a square column with two deep pedestals resting on two steps. The whole sits in a small gravelled area with low rails outside the front of the Town Hall. Originally unveiled and dedicated in 1922 with additions in 1947.

The Town Hall behind is known to have contained a First World War roll of honour dedicated to those who fell, placed there in 1921, but it is not known if it survived a serious fire in 1952.
