The building was used as a billet during World War I. The caretaker of Shakespeare Lecture Hall in 1916 was J. R. Young. 71 North Road also housed a piano and music warehouse, Tuke John & Son, and was also occupied by Thomas Wilson, a hairdresser in 1914.
