Deerbolt Camp, Startforth, Barnard Castle


3rd Battalion Durham Light Infantry


Type: Military Training Site

A series of postcards in Durham County Record Office indicate that the 3rd Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry were active here in 1909-1910 prior to World War I and that the camp was tented at that time.

Deerbolt was used as a military training camp over a long period of time. The local militia forces trained there in the 1890s and the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry was there in the 1950s.

In St Peters Abbeydale Sheffield baptism records for July 1954 there is an entry for Cocker Dennis Ernest & Sylvia for the baptism of their children Tony born March 1954 and Dennis born Mar 1956 the address given is Deerbolt Camp co Durham
