John Alexander Bulman (1890-1916)

Medomsley man served as a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers

John Alexander Bulman was born in Medomsley in 1890. His father was Henry Bulman, a colliery stoneman who was born in Carlisle, Cumberland in 1857. His mother was Ruth Bulman, also from Carlisle, who was born in 1847. His parents married around 1882 and had five known children giving John three sisters and one brother. At the time of the 1891 census the Bulman family lived in Medomsley. By 1901 they had moved to Benwell, Newcastle, Northumberland. The family moved again and in 1911, when John was working as a hewer in a coal mine, they were living at 50 Joicey Terrace, Stanley.

A surviving service record from 1914 shows John’s attestation on 7 December 1914. He was posted to the 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers the same day and given the service number 16/1180. However, the following week, John was discharged due to a decision that he was “unlikely to become an efficient soldier”. His medical record suggests this may have been because of a problem with his eye sight.

There is no further information about John over the next few years. We do know however that at some time he must have been accepted as a soldier into the army to serve with the 23rd Battalion (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers. John was not awarded the 1914-15 Star so he could not have begun serving abroad before the beginning of 1916. Whilst serving as private 23/1294, he was injured in action and was invalided to England. He died of these wounds on 23 March 1916 in Henham Hall Hospital, Sussex. John’s parents were living at 29 Windermere Terrace, South Moor at the time of his death. His body was returned home and he was buried in Stanley New Cemetery.

John Alexander Bulman was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.
