Henry "Harry" Rowell (1894-1921)

Stanley colliery screener served as a private in the Durham Light Infantry

Henry Rowell, also known as Harry, was born in 1894 in Stanley. His father was coal miner William Rowell who was born in 1856 in High Mickley, Northumberland. His mother was Emma Rowell nee Boulton who was born in Shelfanger, Norfolk in 1858. At the time of the 1911 census his parents had been married for 36 years and 11 children had been born to them, two of whom had died. This gave Harry seven sisters and three brothers. In 1901 the Rowell family lived at 2 Alfred Street, Stanley. By 1911 they had moved to 15 Oakey’s Cottages, Stanley. Harry was working as a colliery screener in 1911.

Harry attested in the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) and was made a private with the service number 17769. He served in the 13th Battalion DLI, beginning his service in France on 25 August 1915. Whilst serving with the 19th Battalion DLI, Harry suffered a severe gunshot wound to his right arm on 23 April 1918. He was initially treated at No. 56 Casualty Clearing Station before being transferred from sick convoy to No. 6 Ambulance Train on 24 April. He was put on a hospital ship for return to England on 29 April 1918. Harry was discharged from service on 31 January 1919.

Harry died on 23 February 1921 and was buried in Stanley New Cemetery. He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1914-15 Star for his service in World War One.
