Henry Stobbart (1883-1921)


Stanley miner served in 19th Battalion Durham Light Infantry discharged with tuberculosis


Henry Stobbart was born in Denton Burn, Northumberland in 1883. His father, also called Henry Stobbart, was born in 1860 in Scotswood, Northumberland. In 1891 father Henry was an Inn-keeper at the Green Tree Inn, Benwell, Northumberland where Henry junior and the family lived. Henry’s mother was Mary Stobbart who was born in Newburn in 1860. His parents married around 1881 and had eight known children giving Henry five brothers and two sisters.

By the time of the 1901 census the Stobbart family had moved to 15 Oakey’s Cottages, Stanley and Henry senior was working as a coal miner. Henry junior married Florence Stobbart nee Larkman on 7 August 1907. She was a hairdresser’s daughter from Chester-le-Street. In 1911 the couple lived at 25 Beamish Street, Stanley and had two children; a boy named James born in 1908 and a girl named Mabel born in 1910. A further boy named Mattie was born in 1914. Henry and Florence’s son James died in an accident in 1915 aged seven years old. The couple’s second son Mattie died suddenly in 1916 aged two.

Henry, who worked as a coal miner, attested in the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) on 24 June 1918 in Newcastle, Northumberland. He became a private in the 19th Service Battalion, DLI with the service number 104471. He was posted to France on 16 October 1918 but was treated for tuberculosis in early December 1918 and returned to England on 4 January 1919. He was discharged on 13 June 1919 when he was assessed with a 100% disablement due to tuberculosis for which he received a pension. He died on 24 February 1921 and was buried in Stanley New Cemetery.

Henry Stobbart was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One. He was also awarded the Silver War Badge, awarded to service men who were honourably discharged due to illness or injury.
