John William Barron (1869-1916)

Chopwell miner served in the Northumberland Fusiliers

John William Barron was born near Minsteracres, Northumberland in 1869. His father Thomas Barron (1840-1918) was a woodman from Shotley, Northumberland who later worked as a coal miner. His mother was Elizabeth Barron nee Davison, born in Shotley in 1841, who was an agricultural labourer’s daughter. In 1871 the Barron family lived on Coach Road, High Fortherley, Northumberland. In 1881 they were living in Boyd Street, Consett.

John married Jane Barron around 1890. At the time of the 1911 census the couple were living at 23 Hollings Terrace, Chopwell and John was working as a miner. The census records they had been married for 21 years but had had no children. John enlisted in the 22nd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers (Tyneside Scottish). He served as a private with the service number 22/75. It is not known how or when he was wounded but his wounds were severe enough for him to return to England.
