Samuel Eastwood (1885-1917)


Catchgate miner served as a lance sergeant with 10th DLI


Samuel Eastwood was born in Newhill, Barnsley, Yorkshire in 1885. His father was Joseph Eastwood (1849-1926), a stoneman in a coal mine, originally from Rotherham, Yorkshire. His mother was Dinah Eastwood nee Brooke (1847-1932). His parents were married around 1867. The 1911 census recorded that Joseph and Dinah had been married for 42 years. In that time 15 children had been born of whom nine were still living. Of six known children Samuel had three sisters and two brothers. In 1891 the Eastwood family lived in Newhill. By 1901 they had moved to 62 Joicey Terrace, Oxhill.

On 15 June 1908 Samuel married Barbara Eastwood nee Smith (1886-1979) in Harelaw. She was a coal miner’s daughter from Dipton. At the time of the 1911 census the couple were living in Bethany Terrace, Catchgate with two young daughters born in 1909 and 1911. A third daughter was born in 1914. Samuel was working as a coal miner in 1911.

Samuel attested in the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) in 1914 when he was resident at 6 St Edmund’s Terrace, Dipton. He became a private with the service number 20682 and served in the 10th Battalion. He was later promoted first to corporal and then to lance sergeant. He was wounded on 3 October 1915 whilst serving in France and Flanders and was entitled to wear a wound stripe. He died of valvular disease of the heart in Mitcham, Surrey on 4 September 1917. He was buried in Harelaw Cemetery in grave 10 C 14. His wife, Barbara, was awarded a pension of £27 6s from 11 March 1918.

Samuel Eastwood was awarded the 1914-15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.
