Sidney Arthur James Vaughan (1899-1919)


Furnace worker from Wales served in 20 DLI and died in Cologne


Sidney Arthur James Vaughan, the son of Sidney Vaughan and Jane Vaughan nee Lambert, was born in Weston under Penyard, Ross, Herefordshire, on 2 January 1899. He had a brother and two sisters and lived in Monmouthshire, Wales most of his life until he enlisted at Abertillery on 16 December 1916, when a furnace worker.

He was mobilised on 17 April 1917 and posted to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Little can be discovered about his service history. He was posted to France with the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) on 27 June 1918 and was subsequently transferred to the 20th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (DLI) as part of the British Army of the Rhine (BOAR) in Cologne on 7 May 1919. Some time later he was admitted to the 36th Casualty Clearing Station and died of nephritis and endocarditis on 18 August 1919. He was buried in the Cologne Southern Cemetery.
