William Jameson (1880-1953)

One of three brothers from Shildon who served in the Canadian Army

The first born child of railway clerk John Jameson of Shildon and his wife Agnes, William was born on 19 February 1880 in Shildon and baptised four days later. His father died in 1900 and William became head of the family, also working as his father had before him, as a railway clerk. After the death of their mother, Agnes, in 1911, William, his younger brother, George, and two sisters emigrated to Canada on 9 May 1913, sailing from Liverpool on the SS Empress of Britain. The family settled in Winnipeg with William again working as a clerk on the railway, and they were joined by their brother John the following year.

On 29 April 1916, two months after his younger brother, George, William enlisted in the 203rd Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) becoming Private 234865. After initial training at Camp Hughes he sailed with them on the SS Grampian, arriving in Liverpool on 4 November 1916 and an onward posting to camp at Seaford, Sussex. Just two weeks after arrival William was admitted to Bramshott Military Hospital for a week with rheumatism, leading to him being classified for permanent base duty by a Medical Board and being posted to 18th Reserve Battalion.

The end of January 1917 saw William in hospital again with rheumatism, this time in Eastbourne, and on his discharge he was posted to the Manitoba Regimental Depot and assigned to the Depot Company for duty. October 1917 saw William returning to Canada on board the SS Missanabie where a Medical Board in Quebec found that he had a heart problem, rheumatism and flat feet and classified him at C3, sedentary work in Canada only. He was posted to the 10th Special Service Company in Winnipeg. The following May he was posted to the 10th Battalion Canadian Garrison Regiment and, after a Medical Board in September, he was discharged from the army as medically unfit.

William remained in Winnipeg, living with his sisters and working as a clerk for the railway. On 24 September 1932 he married Winifred Annie Mary Moore at Holy Trinity Cathedral, New Westminster, British Columbia. William and Winifred remained living in British Columbia where he worked for thirteen years for the Post Office, until his retirement in 1946.

William Jameson died from a coronary in Royal Columbian General Hospital, New Westminster on 2 June 1953 and is buried in New Fraser Cemetery, New Westminster.
