Robert Elliott (1890-1917)

Dunston man served with 15th DLI died of wounds in 1917

Born in Blyth, Northumberland in 1890, Robert was one of 11 children born to William and Margaret Elliott. Four of Robert’s siblings were no longer alive by the time of the 1911 census. As a small child Robert moved with his family to Gateshead, where his father continued his work in an iron foundry. By 1911 the family had moved to a different house within the same street in Gateshead and Robert had begun work as a rivet maker.

Robert served in the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry during the war. He was a private with the service number 204273. Little is known about Robert’s time in the army until his death in France on 4 October 1917. He is recorded as having died from wounds and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetry in Belgium.

Sometime between the time of the 1911 census and his death, Robert got married. Records suggest this may have been to Isabel Johnson in 1914. We do know that following Robert’s death his wife Isabel remarried to become Isabel Brook.

Robert received the Victory Medal and British War Medal for his service and is remembered locally on two memorials in his home town of Dunston.
