Frederick Edward Sharp (1892-1971)

Teacher trained at St Bede College listed as wounded with shell shock

Frederick Edward Sharp was the oldest son of Matthew Sharp and Annie Maria Sharp, born on 28 September 1892 in Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Railway worker Matthew and Annie Maria married on 1 March 1890 and had five children in total, three sons and two daughters.

On both the 1901 and 1911 census the Sharp family were living at Central Place in Haltwhistle. By 1911, when Frederick was 19, he was working as a pupil teacher for the County Council. He went on to study at St Bede’s teacher training college in Durham for two years from 1911. When he finished his training, Frederick went to work at Blue Coat School in Durham and, then, in 1914 joined the staff at Haltwhistle Council School as assistant master.

It is unclear exactly when Frederick joined the army but in the Bede Magazine for March 1915 he is listed as serving with the 3rd Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) as a 2nd lieutenant. He was attached to the 12th Battalion DLI in 1916 and served both in France and Belgium with this regiment. In the December 1916 edition of the Bede Magazine Frederick is listed as wounded, suffering from shell shock. Frederick was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal for his service in the First World War.

On 4 December 1916 Frederick married Hilda May Shield from Newcastle at St Peter’s Church in Stockton.

After the war Frederick returned to teaching, first working at Grove Road School in Harrogate from 1919 until 1923. In 1923 he began working as head master at Horsforth Church of England School in Leeds. At the time of the 1939 register Frederick and Hilda were still living in Leeds where Frederick was working as a school master. He is also listed as taking part in Air Raid Precaution service. Frederick died in 1971 in Yorkshire.
