Edith Jane Dale (1865-1956)

Wife of High Sheriff of County Durham appealed for donations of pearls

Edith Jane Dale nee Deas, was the daughter of Sir David Deas, KCB, and his wife, Margaret nee Moyes. Edith was born in Haslar, Gosport where her father was Govenor-Superintendent of the Naval Hospital.

It has not been possible to track down an entry for Edith’s marriage to Brodrick Dale. It seems from the information on the 1911 census, that they likely married in 1887. The newspaper reports of the death of her uncle in September 1887 state that Mrs Brodrick Dale attended the funeral, so she must have married before then.

The 1911 census records that she had been married for 24 years and had three children with her husband, Brodrick Dale. They had five servants living in and two house guests on census night.

In 1918 Edith’s husband, Brodrick, was High Sheriff of County Durham. In her role as the wife of the Sherrif she wrote to the Newcastle Journal in April and June 1918 to ask for pearls to be donated to the Red Cross appeal started by Lady Northcliffe, wife of the Daily Mail founder. Ladies were asked to give one pearl which would then be strung together and used to raise funds. Many women, including members of the royal family, donated pearls. Some women did so in dedication to men who had been killed during the war.

Edith died in Wandsworth, London in 1956.
