Joseph Thompson Dale (1894-1918)

Easington man served as a private in the Royal Marines and took part in the Raid on Zeebrugge

Joseph Thompson Dale was born on 7 March 1894 in the Easington registration district. His father was stationary engine-man William Dale (1864-1932) originally from Normanby, Yorkshire. His mother was Emma Dale nee Lister (1866-1897) from Thornley Colliery. His parents married in 1885 and Joseph was one of three children, with a sister and a brother. His mother died in 1897 and in 1901 Joseph lived with his widowed father and siblings at 33 Gas Street, Hartlepool.

Father William married Margaret Ellen Cooling nee Scott (1866-1920) in 1903. She already had a daughter from her previous marriage and they went on to have a further daughter in 1905. In 1911 Joseph and his family lived at 2 Isaac Street, Hartlepool. He was working as a motor gear attendant at a steelworks at the time of the census.

Joseph enlisted in the Royal Marines Light Infantry (RMLI) on 31 January 1917. He was made a private with the service number 2001/S. He was posted to the 4th Royal Marines Battalion. He took part in the Zeebrugge raid on 23 April 1918 when the Royal Navy attempted to block the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to prevent its use by U-boats. The action was undertaken by a battalion of Royal Marines supported by volunteer sailors. The British suffered 583 casualties in the action including 227 dead. Joseph died of wounds received in the raid and was buried in Hartlepool North Cemetery on 2 May 1918. He is honoured on the Harbour Light 1914-18 memorial in Hartlepool and on the Plaque 1914-18 at Westbourne Methodist Church.

Joseph Thompson Dale was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service during the First World War.
