Sarah Greenwell Raine (1896-1951)

One of four sisters who served as nurses at the 7th VAD hospital in Brancepeth

Sarah Greenwell Raine’s birth was registered in the first few months of 1896. She was one of four daughters and four sons born to John Raine and Ellen Ryle Raine in Stockley, near Brancepeth. John and Ellen were both originally from Hamsterley and married in 1888.

Sarah’s family was a farming family and in 1901 her father John was working at Pack House Farm, Stockley. By the time of the 1911 census the family were living at Nafferton Farm, Brancepeth. The family were still at this address when in 1915 Sarah began serving as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse. She joined her older sisters, Hilda and Annie, who were working at their local VAD hospital, the 7th Durham VAD hospital at Brancepeth Castle. She served alongside her two older sisters and her younger sister Mary at this hospital from 12 October 1915 until 30 October 1918.

After the First World War, Sarah went on to do nurse training between 1923 and 1926 at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, becoming a registered nurse on 19 March 1926. She appears on the UK and Ireland nursing registers for 1928 and 1931, with her address listed as Brownie Colliery in County Durham. Sarah had a long career as a nurse, nursing in various places around the world including Palestine, Egypt, Bermuda and Canada. By 1947 she had become a hospital matron.

Sarah remained unmarried and died on 30 April 1951. Her probate records her address at the time of her death as Nafferton Farm in Brancepeth.
