Charles Thurston Fogg-Elliot (1870-1955)

Durham City born private secretary served as a captain in 3rd DLI

Charles Thurston Fogg-Elliot was born in Durham on 25 June 1870. His father was John Fogg-Elliot (1804-1881), originally from Bolton-le-Moor, Lancashire; a Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Durham. His mother was Sarah Fogg-Elliot nee Tate (1828-1912), from Northumberland. She had previously been married to Durham wine merchant Alan William Hutchinson (1805-1863), with whom she had three sons and a daughter. Her first husband died in 1863 and Sarah married John-Fogg-Elliot, who lived two doors away, in 1864. They had three children together, giving Charles a sister and a brother.

Charles and his family lived at Elvet Hill House, Durham. He attended Durham School, where he was an accomplished sportsman. On completion of his schooling, he studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He was a rowing blue, participating in at least two boat races and was president of Cambridge University Boat Club. After university, Charles worked as private secretary to Lord Curzon and later to Lord Barnard. He married Cicely Fogg-Elliot nee Wilkinson (1878-1932) in Auckland in 1897. She was a vicar’s daughter from Tudhoe. They had four sons during their marriage. In 1911, the family lived at Raby, Staindrop.

Charles served for a number of years in the 4th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry (DLI), reaching the rank of captain. In the 1914-18 war, he served as a captain in 3rd Battalion DLI. He died in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1955.
