Julian Falvey Beyts (1888-1917)

Commanding officer of 15th DLI awarded the DSO

Julian Falvey Beyts, the son of George Falvey and Mary Ann Beyts, was born in India in 1888 and had a brother and two sisters. From 1900 to 1903 he was a boarder at the Loretto School in Musselburgh, Scotland. Some time after he left the Loretto he went to the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. On 19 September 1908 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. On 19 August 1914 he married Hannah Cole (nearly 20 years his senior) and, a month later, was promoted to lieutenant. On 24th October he was transferred to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment as a captain and, a week later, was appointed adjutant of the 11th Battalion. In 1917 he was a temporary major, acting lieutenant colonel in the Durham Light Infantry and at the end of March he was promoted to temporary lieutenant-colonel in command of the 15th Battalion.

On 4 October the battalion took part in the attack on the Broodseinde Ridge near Ypres and Julian was killed the following day during a German counter-attack. He was mentioned in despatches on 21 December and awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). His body was recovered from an unmarked grave in April 1921, having been identified by a star and crown and his name on a handkerchief. He is now buried in the New Irish Farm Cemetery near Ypres.
