Robert Whitehead Vickers (1897-1918)

Robert Whitehead Vickers was born on 19 October 1897, son of William and Emma Jane Vickers of Hood Street, St John’s Chapel. He was one of four children; a brother to Janet (a school teacher), Elsie and Elspeth. His father was manager of the Co-operative store in St John’s Chapel and Robert attended the local school from 20 October 1902 to 22nd December 1911.
He enlisted at Richmond Yorks and served as private 311484 in the Royal Field Artillery. He had been serving with the 6th battalion the Dorsetshire Regiment when he was wounded and died of his wounds on 26 October 1918, aged 21. He is buried in Les Baraques Cemetery, Sangatte, France Grave No VI.B.2
In February and April 1919 the sums of £2 and £1 were paid to his family, and later that year an additional payment of £5 was made.
