Harry Proud (1896-1919)

Served with Royal Field Artillery, family associated with Hudson Masonic Lodge Wolsingham

Harry Proud was born in 1896 in North Shields. His father was William Proud, a police sergeant from Stanhope. His mother was Margaret Jane Proud, nee Nesbit from Spennymoor. The 1911 census records William and Margaret as having had nine children, seven of whom were still alive in 1911. Of children listed on census records, Harry had four brothers and three sisters.

At the time of the 1901 census the family were living at 43 Norfolk Street, Tynemouth. By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to 101 Linskill Street, North Shields. Harry’s father was now a pensioned police sergeant. Harry is listed as ‘serving his time as a cartwright’.

Harry first attested into the army as a wheeler with the regimental number 237. He went on to serve as acting corporal in the Royal Field Artillery as a gunner as part of the 19th Division Ammunition Column. He was given the service numbers 1173 and 750269. He first entered the theatre of war in France on 18 April 1915.

Harry died on 7 February 1919 from disease at the age of 22 at the 18th Casualty Clearing Station. He is buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery, France. He received the 1914-15 star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal for his service.

Harry’s family were associated with the Freemasons based at Hudson Lodge in Wolsingham. A photo of Harry alongside his father William and his brothers Joseph William and Robert Dixon are included in a collection displayed at the Masonic Lodge in Wolsingham. Harry’s brothers Joseph William and Robert Dixon also served during World War One. Robert served as a corporal with the Coldstream Guards. Joseph William’s World War One service is unclear but before the war he served in the Royal Garrison Artillery as a gunner.
