Alice Maude Mary Mason (1876-1965)

Served as a nurse in the 17th VA hospital in Bishop Auckland

Alice Maude Mary Mason was born in Nottingham in 1876. She was baptised on 30 March 1877 at Saint Peter’s church in Nottingham. Her father was John Ambrose Mason, originally from Hull. Her mother was Emma Mason. Alice had one sister and two brothers. By the time of the 1881 census the family had moved to Stanhope and John was working as a schoolmaster. The family were living at Hartwell School. John is listed as married, although there is no record of his wife Emma on this census. Records suggest that Alice’s mother Emma died in 1883.

By the time of the 1891 census, John was married to Mary Mason, nee Billerly, from West Rainton. John and Mary had had one child by this time, Mary Billerly Mason, who was Alice’s step-sister.

At the time of the 1891 census the family were living at Ivy Cottage in Stanhope. Both of Alice’s parents were recorded as certified elementary school teachers. Alice is listed as a temporary monitor in an elementary school.

By the time of the 1901 census Alice was a certified teacher. The family were living at the school house in Stanhope and her father is listed as a schoolmaster. Alice’s father died suddenly the following year on 24 June 1902 at the age of 51. His death was reported in the Durham County Advertiser on 27 June 1902.

By the time of the 1911 census Alice was working as a head teacher. She was living with her step mother Mary and her step sister at 3 Albert Terrace in Stanhope.

On 23 May 1915 Alice began nursing at the 17th Voluntary Aid (VA) hospital in Etherley, Bishop Auckland. She continued to nurse here for nearly two years, serving until 15 April 1917. She worked alongside her step-sister Mary at this hospital during 1915 and 1916.

Alice died in 1965 in Durham at the age of 88.
