George J. Goode

Glasgow man who served with 2nd Battalion DLI won the DCM in Mozambique

Little is known about George Goode who was from Glasgow. It would appear that he enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) in 1900 and was posted to South Africa he where fought during the Boer War. The Battalion returned to England at the end of hostilities but, on 19 September 1914, he landed in France. At some time during the next four years, he was promoted to lance sergeant and posted to Africa where he was attached to the 2nd Battalion King’s African Rifles. He was later promoted to acting Company Quartermaster Sergeant and on 6 September 1918 won the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for action in Portuguese East Africa, now Mozambique.

His award of the DCM was gazetted on 17 April 1919 and the citation reads:
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Pere, Portuguese East Africa, on 6th September, 1918. When his company was surrounded by a superior force and his officers had become casualties, the enemy charged the position. He counter-attacked with great vigour, driving the enemy back successfully. He showed great powers of initiative and ability to command”.
