George Whaley (1885-1917)
Consett man served with 12th and 18th DLI commemorated at Arras
George was born in 1885 in Consett, the son of Joseph and Ann Whaley. His father was a railway platelayer and the family were living in Consett Junction in 1891. George’s father died in 1897 and his mother in 1899. In 1901 and 1911 George was living with his older brother, Robert, but still at Consett Junction as his brother was working on the railway. In 1911 George was also employed by the North East Railway Company as a general labourer.
He enlisted at Consett and disembarked in France on 25 August 1915. He was killed in action on 16 May 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France.
