Charles Henry Mudd (1894-1916)
Mason from Staindrop served with 11th DLI
Charles was the son of Henry and Jane Mudd of Staindrop. His father was a forester and woodsman.
In 1911 Charles was employed as a mason.
In 1914 he and his brother, Arthur, were working on a cottage up at Raby Home Farm. Arthur was married to Cicely and they had a son, Cecil Arthur, who was Margaret Mudd’s father-in-law. For many years Clematis House in Staindrop was the family home.
Charles joined the 11th Battalion Durham Light Infantry in February 1916 and served in France and Flanders.
He died of wounds received in action on 1 September 1916, aged 21, and is buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery, France.
