Norman Louis Anderson (1893-1918)
Groom on Raby Estate served with Border Regiment
Norman was the son of James and Mary Anderson of Neasham, Darlington. He was born in 1893 in the parish of All Saints, Hurworth.
In 1901 Norman’s father was a bricklayer. Norman had two sisters, Alma and Jeannie, and a brother, James W. In 1910 Norman went to work at Raby Estates as a domestic groom.
He joined the Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry at Penrith on 11 September 1914 (2297, 315273) and afterwards transferred to the 7th Battalion Border Regiment.
Norman served in France and Flanders. He was awarded the Military Medal on 27 July 1915 for acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire. Conferment of the medal was announced in the London Gazette on 16 July 1918.
His medal was received by his sister Mrs Frances Elliott of Gateshead on 16 October 1919.
Norman was killed in action on 9 October 1918, aged 24, and is buried at Montigny Communal Cemetery in France.
