George Green (1894-1917)


Tudhoe Grange man served as a private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry


George Green was born in Tudhoe Grange on 23 December 1894. His father was Shotton coal miner Joseph Green born in 1866. His mother was Elizabeth Jane Green nee Reed (1869-1918), an ironworker’s daughter from Mount Pleasant. His parents married around 1889 and had seven children made up of five boys and two girls. George was their third born child. At both the 1901 and 1911 censuses the Green family lived at 13 Burn Terrace, Tudhoe Grange. In 1911 George was working as a pony driver in a coal mine.

George originally enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) on 7 September 1914. He transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNVR) at Crystal Palace on 10 September 1914. He became an able seaman in the Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division (RND) with the service number KP/810.

George was treated for inflammation of connective tissue in his feet on three occasions and in his groin on one occasion during his service. He was invalided to the UK on 13 June 1917 until being drafted back to the Anson Battalion on 11 September 1917. George was killed in action on the opening day of the Second Battle of Passchendaele on 26 October 1917. No information is recorded as to the location of his grave. He is honoured on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, Zonnebeke, Belgium. He is also remembered on a screen in St Andrew’s Church in Tudhoe Grange.

George Green was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal for his service in World War One.
