Edward Toole (1892-1917)


Coal miner from Felling served with 1st/9th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial


Edward Toole, the son of Thomas and Margaret Toole, was born in Felling, Gateshead in 1892 and had two brothers and seven sisters. He lived in Felling all his life until he enlisted in the 1st/9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) when he was working in a coal mine. He was killed at the Battle of Arras on 23 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, in the Durham Cathedral DLI Book of Remembrance and in St Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, High Street, Felling on the Communion Gates and 1914-1918 Plaque.
