Low Spennymoor man served with 18th DLI commemorated at Arras

Henry Stuart (or sometimes Stewart) was born in Hartlepool on 31 December 1891. He was baptised at Saint Paul’s Hartlepool on 21 January 1892. He was the son of John and Frances (Fanny) Stuart and the family appear on the 1901 at 21 Albert Street, Hartlepool. He is listed on the census along with his sisters, Jane and Margeret, and two lodgers. By 1911 the family had moved to 66 Half Moon Lane, Low Spennymoor, his sisters seem to have moved out and the family have another lodger living with them.

Henry attested on 4 May 1915 at Spennymoor. He declared that he was 23 years and five months old and that he worked as a plasterer. He named his father as his next of kin. He was passed as fit to serve on the same day. He embarked for France on 8 April 1916 with the 18th Battalion Durham Light Infantry. On 22 April he was attached to the 3rd Entrenching Battalion until 7 May. Three months before his death Henry was promoted to the rank of lance corporal (unpaid).
