Ernest Moon (1887-1917)

From West Hartlepool, killed in action at Arras with 18th Battalion DLI

Ernest Moon, the son of Robert & Mary Hannah Moon, was born in Cold Harbour, Helmsley, Yorkshire in 1887. He had a brother and a sister and the family moved to Stranton, West Hartlepool, shortly after he was born.

Ernest enlisted in the 21st Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 9 August 1915 at West Hartlepool – he had been working as an iron moulder – and the following February he married Mary Elizabeth Mowbray, with whom he had a daughter also called Mary Elizabeth. On 26 April 1916, Private Moon was transferred to the 15th Battalion DLI and landed in Boulogne the same day. On 1 July 1916 he was wounded on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and at the end of that month was transferred to the 18th (The Pals) Battalion DLI, and returned to the front two days later.

Private Moon was killed at the Battle of Arras on 3 May 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance and five local memorials.
