James Burns Miller (1880-1917)
Gateshead man served in 1st/6th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial
James Burns Miller, the son of George and Janet Miller, was born in Gateshead on 4 March 1880. He had one brother and four sisters. According to the census, his father, George worked as a glass bottle blower. James started work as an artificial stone maker but in the 1911 census his occupation is given as ‘labourer’.
James enlisted in the 15th Battalion Durham Light infantry at Gateshead on 27th November 1915 and landed in France on 15th November 1916. He was transferred to the 1st/6th Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 6th Decemebr and was killed at the Battle of Arras on 14 April 1917. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance, and on two memorials in Gateshead.
