Sidney Charles Rackham (1891-1917)


Norfolk resident served with 1st/9th DLI killed at the Battle of Arras


Sidney Charles Rackham was born in 1891, the son of Benjamin (a farm labourer and horseman) and Rebecca Rackham of Fritton, Long Stratton, Norfolk. He was baptised in the parish of Fritton on 22 February 1891.

By 1911 Sidney had followed his father by working as a farm horseman. His siblings were Maud (a domestic servant), Walter (a farm labourer), May and Gwendoline. A further child had died in infancy.

Sidney joined the 1st/9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry (DLI) as a Private. He was killed on 23 April 1917 during the Battle of Arras. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial Bay 8.
