Septimus George Nevin (1896-1917)
Chopwell man served with 22nd DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial
Septimus was born in Tanfield on 15 September 1896, the seventh child of William (a coal miner) and Isabel Nevin. In 1901 the family were living in Low Friarside and Septimus was attending Tanfield Leazes Board school which he left in 1909.
In 1911, the Nevins were living in at 6 Broad Oak Terrace, Chopwell and Septimus had become a miner like all the other males in the family. He attested at Newcastle on 29 May 1916 and became private 32784 in 22nd Battalion DLI (Pioneers). The family was then living at 18 Wittonstall Terrace, Chopwell. On 28 June 1916 he was posted to the 16th Battalion. He was sent to France in March 1917 and was posted to the 15th Battalion at Etaples.
Septimus was killed in action on 05 May 1917.
