James Phillips ( -1917)
Irish-born man served with 1st/6th DLI commemorated on the Arras Memorial
James Phillips was born at Charlestown, County Mayo, Ireland (date unknown). His father was James and he had a brother, Thomas.
He enlisted at Middlesbrough and served with the Yorkshire Regiment and then with the Durham Light Infantry. He fought at the Battle of Arras which was a British offensive on the Western Front. The assault lasted from 9 April 1917 until 16 May 1917. British troops attacked German defences near the French city of Arras where James was killed in action on 14 April 1917.
