Joseph McPherson (1893-1917)


From New Kyo, served in 1st/8th DLI, killed in action at Arras


Joseph McPherson, the son of James and Nancy Ann McPherson, was born in Escomb, Bishop Auckland in 1893. He had three brothers and two sisters and by 1911 the family had moved to New Kyo where he worked as a pony putter in a coal mine. He joined the 1st/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry at Consett. Lance Corporal McPherson was killed in action on 24 April 1917 during at the Battle of Arras. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France; in the Durham Cathedral Book of Remembrance; and two memorials in Annfield Plain.
