Alexander Henry Poole (1897-1917)


Essex man served with 1st/5th DLI commemorated on Arras Memorial


Alexander Henry Poole was born around 1897, the son of Fredrick and Sarah Poole of 63 Dames Road, Forest Gate, Essex. By 1911 the family had moved to 16 Beachcroft Road, Leytonstone, Essex. His father (aged 46) was a traveller to a corn merchant and his wife, Sarah, was 43 years of age. Their children by this time (1911) included Fredrick (aged 17, working as a clerk in a glass manufacturers), Bertram (aged 15), Alexander Henry (aged 14), Arthur (aged 11), Ralph (aged 7), Beatrice (aged 5), Leonard (aged 3) and Edgar (aged 2). Two children had died in infancy.

There is some evidence that Alexander Henry first enlisted in the Essex Regiment in West Ham as private number 3548. He later was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry, with the regimental numbers 9474 and 200992. He was killed on 23 April 1917 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 8.
