Rudolph Augusta Cameron (1889-1917)

From Sunderland, served with 18th Battalion DLI (Durham Pals)

Rudolph Cameron was born in 1889, the eldest son and second child of Joseph Augustus Cameron (a seaman) and Margaret Jane Cameron, nee Aldridge. He was baptised in Monkwearmouth on 1 May 1889. In 1891 the family were living at 34 Nile Street, Monkwearmouth. In 1901 the family, now at 3 Liddell Street, Monkwearmouth, had grown to seven children.

In 1911, Rudolph was working as a shop assistant in a furniture business. On 12 June 1912, he married Robertina Coxon Roberts at St Hilda, Millfield and they had four children between 1913 and 1917, though two sadly died in infancy.

Rudolph Cameron enlisted in Sunderland 8 December 1915 under the Derby Scheme. He was then working as a baker’s van man and living at 4 St Mark’s Street. When he was medically examined on 24 August 1916, prior to being mobilised, he was working as a french polisher. After his initial training with the 4th Battalion DLI, 4/38620 Private Cameron was sent to France, joining the 18th Battalion DLI on 10 December 1916.

On 3 May 1917, during the closing stages of the Battle of Arras, the 18th Battalion DLI attacked towards Gavrelle. During confused fighting around an old windmill, Private Cameron was listed as missing. In October 1917, as his body had not been recovered from the battlefield, Rudolph Cameron was reported to have been killed in action on 3 May.
